Your hotel on the Sellaronda with breakfast included

With skis on your feet in winter. And the Dolomites at your feet in summer.

You long to conquer the mountains. By motorbike. On skis. With pedal power. Wearing boots, a rope, and a climbing belt. There’s nothing more satisfying than when you look up at the peaks on your way home and think: “I was up there today.”

At Chalet Barbara, your B&B hotel on the slopes of the Sellaronda, you can enjoy all this from a central, strategic location. We’re nestled between Mt Marmolada and the Sella massif, within the Dolomiti Superski area, with direct access to the Sellaronda circuit. The magnificent slopes of Porta Vescovo are right on our doorstep, and the Monte Burz chairlift is just steps away. The biggest cycling races in the Dolomites pass through here. The most photographed trails? Just a short trip away. All the energy of high-altitude adventures just a stone’s throw from the peace of our mountain village, Arabba.

Skiing

A hotel on the ski slopes in the Dolomites is a dream come true. Here’s what you can look forward to!

  • Perfect snow conditions until the end of April, thanks to the elevation and north-facing position
  • Ski-in, ski-out from our hotel: straight onto the Sellaronda and the 1,200km of slopes in the Dolomiti Superski area
  • Arabba-Marmolada ski area: the Queen of the Dolomites can only be accessed from Arabba.
  • The slopes of Porta Vescovo: red runs and, above all, stunning north-facing black runs with a dizzying gradient. The infamous Fodoma is here: are you up for tackling a gradient of nearly 55%?
  • The Burz chairlift connects to the chalet: hop on, head up to the Burz mountain hut, and you’re on the Sellaronda.
  • Ski room with private heated lockers, accessible using your room key
  • The Ikon Pass lets you explore the Dolomiti Superski area from our hotel, with direct access to the ski slopes

Hiking

How many trails are there around here? So many! These are our recommendations.

  • For incredible photos – Viel dal Pan, a panoramic loop that’s not to be missed. From the mountain station of the Porta Vescovo cable car at 2,500 metres above sea level, the route follows the Fedaia ridge up to Pordoi, home to the Great War Museum and the German Ossuary. Return by the Fodom cable car, then on foot to Arabba.
  • An open-air museum – Col di Lana. A vantage point between the Eastern and Western Dolomites, this is where Italian and Austro-Hungarian troops once clashed. From Pieve di Livinallongo (a 10-minute drive from Arabba), follow the CAI 21/a trail and you’ll reach the summit in 3 hours (700 metres of elevation gain), walking past trenches, tunnels, and the crater left by a mine that exploded in 1916. At the top, you’ll find a mountain hut, a memorial chapel, and a 360-degree view.
  • A high-altitude lake – from the Bec de Roces towers to Lake Boè. A path winding its way through jagged rock towers, mountain pines, and Swiss stone pines, passing the square-shaped Sasso Quadro rock before leading to a natural pond teeming with little fish. Start from Passo Campolongo (if you like, you can take the chairlift up to the Bec de Roces towers) and follow the CAI trail markers 640 and 638.
  • An epic tour – crossing the Sella massif. The sky is blue, the sun is shining brightly, and your muscles are tingling: it’s the perfect day for the TranSella! Start from Mt Sass Pordoi, taking the cable car up to 2,950 metres above sea level if you like; follow trails 627 and 638 to reach the 3,152-metre-high summit of Mt Piz Boè; then pass by the Bec de Roces towers and return to Arabba via trail 637. Alternatively, head down to the Campolongo pass to catch the bus back. A 1,600-metre climb, or around 1,000 metres if you take the lifts. And afterwards, it’ll be time for the adults-only spa.
  • Discover all the trails in Arabba here.

  • Downhill and MTB tours: hop on the Burz chairlift just steps away from Chalet Barbara and enjoy a 6-minute ride full of jumps and hairpin bends through the larch trees. On the Crepe Rosse MTB tour, you can enjoy a 26km ride through valleys and over mountain passes from Arabba to Alleghe, with views of Mt Pelmo and Mt Civetta. And if you fancy a full day in the saddle, the 62.5km Sellaronda MTB tour awaits you.

Climbing + via ferratas

The rock is calling. Here’s Arabba’s answer:

  • Ferrata delle Trincee: a historic, scenic via ferrata that leads from Porta Vescovo over rocky outcrops to the Padon pass. The start of the route is a 15-minute walk from the mountain station of the Porta Vescovo cable car. The Cesare Piazzetta via ferrata takes you up to the 3,152-metre-high summit of Mt Piz Boè.
  • Climbing with a view of the Bec de Roces crag: scale the towers at the foot of the Sella Group. To the east, there’s a section of single-pitch routes (5b-7a, 34m, slabs, and vertical or slightly overhanging walls); to the west, there are Alpine multi-pitch routes (routes of up to three pitches, graded III to V+). More details here.
  • Not sure who to go climbing with? Ask us: we’ll recommend a guide!
  • And after the climb? Come back and enjoy an aperitif.
